FAQ

Common questions about Norn. If yours isn't here, email support@nornhq.com.

General

What is Norn?

Norn is a portfolio analytics and AI research copilot for individual investors. You connect your brokerages, and Norn runs continuous quantitative and AI-driven research tailored to what you actually own — accessible either in the Norn app or from Claude via the MCP server.

Is Norn a broker?

No. Norn is a research and information tool. Your assets stay in the custody of your brokerage — Norn only ever has read-only access. Norn cannot place trades, transfer funds, or move your money.

Is Norn giving me investment advice?

No. Nothing Norn tells you constitutes investment, financial, legal, or tax advice, nor a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any security. AI-generated output may be inaccurate or incomplete. You are solely responsible for your investment decisions.

Accounts & data

Which brokerages does Norn support?

Norn connects through SnapTrade, which supports 100+ US and international brokerages plus major crypto exchanges. See the full list at Supported brokerages.

Does Norn store my brokerage password?

No. Credentials go directly from your browser to SnapTrade's authentication flow, which passes them to your broker's OAuth endpoint. Norn only ever receives a short-lived read-only access token.

How do I disconnect an account?

Open Items → click the account → Disconnect. This revokes Norn's SnapTrade access token immediately. See Connect a brokerage for details.

How often does data refresh?

Positions and performance refresh automatically on a schedule. You can also trigger an immediate sync from the account page. Some brokers rate-limit refreshes to once every 10–15 minutes.

AI & MCP

What's MCP?

Model Context Protocol — an open standard from Anthropic that lets AI clients (Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) call structured tools on remote servers. Norn ships an MCP server so any compatible client can query your portfolio and research. See MCP overview.

Do I need Claude to use Norn?

No. Norn has its own AI assistant built in, powered by the same tools that MCP exposes externally. The MCP server is for people who prefer to work in Claude Desktop or Claude Code.

Does Norn train AI on my data?

No. We contractually prohibit third-party AI providers from using your data to train foundation models. Your holdings are used only to answer the questions you ask.

Why does my Claude client show "Permission denied"?

The organization you're targeting is on the BASIC (free) tier, which excludes account and portfolio tools. Upgrade to Pro from Settings → Subscription in the Norn app.

Billing

What's the difference between tiers?

  • BASIC (free) — Landing pages and general navigation. No brokerage sync, no per-ticker analytics, no saved portfolios.
  • Pro — Everything. Brokerage sync, quant analytics, saved portfolios, MCP server, Norn AI.
  • Advanced — Pro plus higher AI token limits.

Beta pricing is discounted. See Pricing on the landing page.

Can I switch between annual and monthly?

Yes, at any time from Settings → Subscription. Prorated adjustments run through Stripe automatically.

How do refunds work?

Fees are non-refundable except where required by law. You can cancel at any time; access continues until the end of the current billing period.

Security & privacy

Can Norn steal my money?

No. Norn's brokerage connection is read-only. There is no trade or transfer permission — even a compromised Norn couldn't move assets. See Security for the full trust model.

How do I report a security issue?

Email security@nornhq.com. We respond within one business day and coordinate disclosure timelines in good faith.
