Connect a brokerage
Norn reads your holdings, performance, and transactions through SnapTrade, a regulated financial-data aggregator that connects to hundreds of US and international brokerages. This page walks through the flow and what Norn does with the data.
The connect flow
- Sign in to Norn. Start the connect flow from either place:
- Items page → + Add item → Connect account, or
- Norn AI → the + button in the message composer → Connect account.
- Either entry opens SnapTrade's secure login window.
- Search for your brokerage. Sign in with the same credentials you use for that broker — the credentials never touch Norn's servers; they go directly to SnapTrade's authentication flow.
- Approve the requested permissions. Norn always asks for read-only scopes: positions, orders, transactions, and account metadata. No trade or transfer scopes are requested.
- Wait for the initial sync. First-time syncs take 30–120 seconds depending on your broker; subsequent refreshes are near-instant.
Once complete, the account appears in your Items list and gets its own page at
/account/[accountId]What we sync
For every connected account, Norn pulls:
- Positions — symbol, units held, current market value, average cost basis, unrealized P&L.
- Performance metrics — computed over 1M / 3M / 6M / 1Y / YTD windows and joined with Norn's quant database (Sharpe, expected return, volatility) so you see both broker-reported and market-wide metrics side by side.
- Transaction history — buys, sells, dividends, transfers, and fees, paginated at 100 rows per request.
Data refreshes automatically. You can also trigger an immediate re-sync from the account page.
What Norn cannot do
Norn's connection is read-only — Norn cannot:
- Place trades or modify orders
- Move cash between accounts
- Change your brokerage settings or personal information
- Add or remove authorized users on your brokerage account
Your assets stay in the custody of your brokerage at all times. Read our Security page for the full trust model.
Disconnecting
Open Items, click the account, then Disconnect. This revokes Norn's SnapTrade access token immediately. Cached position and transaction data is deleted or de-identified within a commercially reasonable period, per our Privacy Policy.
You can also revoke Norn's access from your brokerage's own permissions screen at any time.
If your broker requires MFA on login, you may be prompted to complete the challenge again during a re-sync.
Troubleshooting
- "Authentication failed" — your broker session likely expired. Reconnect from the Items page; SnapTrade will prompt you to re-authenticate.
- Missing positions — some brokers exclude certain account types (e.g. crypto sub-accounts, sweep accounts) from their data API. Check your broker's SnapTrade integration notes.
- Data looks stale — pull-to-refresh on the account page forces a re-sync. If problems persist, contact support@nornhq.com.
